Jye and Riley both made the FSC Junior Pennant team
Local golfers, Jye Halls and Riley Bowman were both selected in the FSC Junior Pennant team to take on the Kiama Junior Pennant team in the first round of the State-wide knock out. Kiama were successful in winning their Illawarra District Junior Pennant Championships earlier in the year.
The two teams came together at the Catalina Golf Club on 7 September 2019 to see who would advance to the semi-final of the State Championships to take on Queanbeyan. It became apparent early that a tight battle was going to be fought out over the day with the number 1 and 2 matches going neck and neck early in the round. The other matches were also tight. It was going to come down to the last couple of holes to see who the winner was.
The first match went to Kiama when Wil Diabarra defeated Jye Halls 5 and 4. The second match went to James Dickenson (Catalina) with a tight 2 up victory. The third match between Morgan Thornton (Eden) and Will Bromley (Kiama) went to Kiama 2 up, while Riley Bowman (Mollymook) fought back hard to eventually go down 2 and 1 as Kiama took a 3-1 lead in the six-match competition.
FSC fought hard in the final two matches with Sophie Epplestun (Catalina) winning her match 5 up against Brock Callaghan (Kiama). It then came down to Sophie’s brother, Bill Epplestun, who was able to win his match 3 and 2 against Jett Parker (Kiama). With the scores locked at 3-3 at the end of all six matches, it was time for the two number ones to head back out onto the course to decide the outcome.
Jye Halls took on Wil Diabarra again in the sudden death playoff. It took three playoff holes to decide the outcome of the match but Jye’s consistent solid play, hitting all three tee shots on the fairway and all approach shots to inside 15 feet, eventually took the win with a steady two putt on the third extra hole.
It was great that Jye was able to turn the tables on the 2018 event when Kiama took the victory in a playoff and Jye lost that match to Eddie Ward. The FSC Team will now take on the very strong Queanbeyan team at a date and facility to be announced. Well done to the entire team who fought hard for the win.
