VIEW Enjoys Guest Speakers
At the September Mollymook VIEW Club meeting, the ladies enjoyed talks by speakers with news of the past and future. Jan Thompson reminded us of how it all started when a group of concerned businessmen clubbed together to buy toys for the Carlingford Boys home. They also raised and donated money to Waterfall Sanitorium and other deserving causes and institutions. They formed the Smith Family in 1922, promoted and supported by Charles Kingsford-Smith and Charles Ulm, and was ‘Men Only.’ One such visionary, George Forbes, realising that women could and should also be involved, initiated VIEW Club in 1960, an organisation which was second only to the CWA in memberships.
As we all know, Mollymook VIEW Club was started on 31 July 1981 with a meeting at Hacketts Restaurant, Milton, with our own Mary Campey and Jan Thompson among those foundation members. Our Club is proud to carry on their early leadership and foresight.
Birthday girls for September were Gloria Turner, Margot Lester, Del Brown and Judy Powe. A very happy birthday to you all!
Guest speaker was Helen Quinn from the Illawarra Retirement Trust’s Milton facility on proposed upgrading of the buildings commencing with the Nursing Home next year, and improvements to parking and self-care units to follow. Helen spoke to I.R.T’s other assistance for seniors besides residential care with home care and nursing available. All of these matters are of great interest to the membership as mature age ladies may be contemplating their, or their families needs in the area in the future.
I.R.T started with construction of a retirement facility, Diment Towers, in Wollongong by Max Diment, a man with a vision for care in the community. He resides there to this day. I.R.T is a not-for-profit organisation; today, known as ‘For Purpose.’ Following the successful coffee morning at Coast Café, another will be held at Driftwood Café, also in Milton on Tuesday 24 September 2019, 10.30am
The next meeting is on Monday 14 October 2019, 11.00am for 11.30am. Apologies to Marlene Pymble on 0414 639 578 by the Tuesday prior to the meeting.
