Walk Down Memory Lane

Margaret Wilford

As we farewell the old year and welcome the new, Ulladulla Evening VIEW Club member, Margaret Wilford has offered some of her memories of Ulladulla from times past. Margaret said, “Changes come and go. VIEW organisations in this district were not up and running forty-five years ago, but we are certainly making a difference now, with so many children being supported with their education.

VIEW is part of the Smith Family organisation contributing to the Learning for Life program supporting disadvantaged Australian children to gain an education. Margaret said, “Some of the many changes that I am aware of in the past forty-five years are: Ulladulla High School wasn’t built; there was no indoor swimming pool; no traffic lights; no Sarah Claydon Village or Mollymook Shops; no KFC and no McDonalds.

There was no Aldi, Coles, Woolworths, Bunnings, Top of the Town Arcade, Dunn & Lewis or Baptist Church; the Treehouse Café was an optometrist, then a Doctor’s Surgery, and the dentist was above the Commonwealth bank.”

Some more changes Margaret recollects: “Heading south along the highway from the harbour, the tobacconist was a Café, Marshalls Menswear was where IMB is located, the Offline Shop in the main street was a grocery store, Rowan’s Arcade only had four shops with Funland upstairs with open air trampolines, the Philip Centre at the traffic lights housed Stan’s Pies, the Camping shop, Chemist and the Book Card and Game centre.

Ulladulla Plaza was a paddock, and eventually, Bush Surf had a small shop near the highway. Heading up the hill, Hilders Clothing shop, Chinese Restaurant, TAB and Shoe shop were on the western side. Harris Scarfe was half grocery and was called Edmonds I think?”

Thanks to Margaret for reminding us of some of the many changes she has seen. No doubt there are lots more and these recollections will spark some memories from readers who have lived in this wonderful town for many a year. Next issue, Margaret remembers Milton.
